MetroTex Landscape Management’s history goes all the way back to 1988, when owner Eric Melton was a student at the University of North Texas. After graduating, he decided to focus on his landscaping business and started to learn the skills he needed to accommodate varying customer requests. 

Today, the company offers commercial and residential property maintenance, landscape design and installation, irrigation, and lighting installations for customers in the Irving, Texas area.

But over time, Melton discovered that his business growth had plateaued. “we were stuck at around $400,000 [revenue] per year and couldn’t get past that level,” Melton recalled. With SCORE's help, Melton revitalized his business.

My successes. 

After regular monthly meetings with Rudnick, Melton reports his company’s revenue has increased by about 65 percent. The additional business has allowed MetroTex to begin working with another subcontractor, as well as picking up more part-time help. 

How SCORE helped. 

Melton attended a SCORE accounting workshop and met with volunteer mentor Chuck Rudnick. With Rudnick’s guidance, Melton reviewed and refined his business plan “that was simple yet effective in order to help me identify where our money was coming from, which in turn helped us isolate where to promote.”
